Copenhagen!
Copenhagen!
After a bit more than four months in England it was time for a little trip! Gemma and I were talking for a long time about going to Copenhagen. My host parents heard about that and they gave me the ticket to Copenhagen as a Christmas present! So super sweet.
Wednesday very early in the morning we took a taxi to the airport, which was more or less the same price as the train. When we arrived there we needed to go to the security check, of course I was the one where the detective ports went on… after that it was time to wait and wait. I had two bags and I was only allowed to have one bag, so I needed to try to find a way to put everything into one bag.
After a short flight we started to land. I was a bit in panic when we started landing and all I could see was sea. But we survived!
We needed to take a metro and a bus to get to the hostel.
We were too early for the check-in. So we decided to wait in the reception, bar and restaurant area. The hostel was made for young people like us.
There were travellers from all over the world. What I found out is that there are loads of people who travel alone, I never realized that. Before we went to Copenhagen we bought some playing cards, we found out that, that is a really good way to make friends (:
After an hour we finally could go to our room. To make this trip cheaper we shared a room with 4 other people.
At 3 o’clock our free walking tour started. Free walking tours are called free but they expect you to give a tip after the walk. We did this tour with lots of other people. We walked in the south part op Copenhagen. This area is full of churches and other famous buildings.
We also walked past Christina. I would never go there alone, but with this tour it was okay. Christiana is called the green light district. If you get what they mean.
They don’t see it as part of Copenhagen, they see them as a little country. They don’t want to be part of Europe. When you walk through this district you feel like you are back in time, the hippie time.
After this tour we went back to the hostel. There we ordered a pizza. So funny, the hostel called a restaurant. After a wheel there came a man to deliver the pizza to the kitchen. In the kitchen they put the pizza on a plate and they served it to us.
The hostel had every night an event. That night there was beer pong. We played with people from the whole world.
After a while there was a group of American girls who introduced an other game, flip cup. It was a fun night (:
That night we decided to make it not too late, the next day we were planning to do something really fun!
Because of the shared rooms, you wake up early… In the morning we had a delicious breakfast and we secretly made a lunch. After that it was time to discover Copenhagen by…… Bike!!
It felt amazing to finally cycle again!! Normally in The Netherlands I cycle every single day. Now after four months it felt really good and fun (:
We decided to make a round, first to the parks,
a long the old royalty houses
to the little mermaid. That one is very, very little!
After this we went through old Copenhagen
and Amelienborg.
Last but not least we went to beautiful Nyhavn.
Back in the hostel there was a Spanish woman who started talking to Gemma. She gave us loads of names of good places. We decided to go to the food market which she was talking about. There we had a delicious ice cream!
Denmark really felt a bit like The Netherlands, with all the canals, nice bicycle paths and even a windmill.
When we got back it was time for shared dinner at the hostel, for 20 crowns (around 3 euros) we had dinner! It was an easy soup but very cheap and nice.
We had a little party in the hostel with all the people from last night. It was time to see how night life is in Denmark. We found out that it is super expensive to get in clubs and when we found a free place there where all crazy dancing people around us. It was super fun and at one moment we were in a dance battle (:
The next day we thought that it would be super funny to say that we went to Denmark but we saw Sweden. So we took the train to Malmo and in like half a hour we where there!
The whole day we discovered Malmo and the museums.
I had been in Malmo before but at that time there was a festival in the centre. So today on a normal Friday it was super different.
The next day it was unfortunately already time to go back to England. It might sound weird, but it felt super normal to take the plane to Gatwick instead to Schiphol.
It was a holiday to never forget! I really want to go back, their are still some things I didn’t see.
For all the young people who want to go to Copenhagen, go to Down town hostel (:
Lots of Love,
Evelien and a bit of Gemma (:
